Artists amble through Dartington Gardens

POSTPONED [11 April 2020]

Open studio: 10am – 12noon. Garden walk: from 12noon.

This event is free and everyone is welcome – no booking required.

Meeting in the Playhouse, in the midst of Dartington Gardens, artist and Aller Park Studios co-founder Josie Cockram will lead a discursive Spring walk through the gardens with Maria de Lima and Ben Sanderson.

The artists walk – or ‘artists amble’! – will be part of an open morning, 10am – 1pm, where Josie and Maria will share things that they have noticed, things that they have made, readings and ideas developed through their preceding week-long collaborative residency. Ahead of the walk, join Josie, Maria and Ben in the Playhouse for discussion, readings and a presentation of work and ideas in progress from 10am to 12noon.

This short residency is the first in an occasional series that Aller Park Studios will convene to enable two artists to begin a conversation, and perhaps an ongoing project, with focus on a particular theme or idea.

Josie and Maria, working across sculpture and sound, film-making, painting, performance and print, will explore ideas related to the gardens at Dartington and their development recorded in Dorothy Elmhirst’s garden diaries (1942-68). Approaching the gardens as both a physical and conceptual space, their week together will offer a period during which art works can seed.

Based in Cornwall, Ben has recently been artist-in-residence at Trebah Garden. He will join Josie and Maria to talk about his experience at Trebah, and a series of explorations through those gardens that he invited people from all walks of life to join him for.
